Short answer: for most Shopify apps, funnel optimization is the best growth hack. A funnel is a chain of multiplications. A 50% gain in one step is a 50% gain overall, on every traffic source you have, with no extra acquisition cost. Improve three steps by 25% each and the funnel doubles. Most apps can at least double their funnel conversion rate, and doubling can triple new-customer growth.
Growing a Shopify app is hard. Category giants take most of the merchants. Dozens of smaller apps fight over what is left. And new Shopify app releases grew from about 50 a week to over 750 a week (Store Leads).
The usual tactics each hit a wall:
| Tactic | Where it stalls |
|---|---|
| Content and influencers | Your competitors do the same. The channel saturates. |
| Outreach to target merchants | Merchants get bombarded. |
| App store SEO and AEO | Zero-sum. You gain, a competitor loses. |
| Performance marketing | On the top keywords, cost per click and conversion rate can put acquisition cost out of touch with lifetime value. |
All four drive merchants into your funnel. That is the part every app fights over. Many Shopify app developers stop there and ignore conversion. That’s a mistake.
For most Shopify apps, optimizing the funnel is the most reliable way to grow to $100K MRR.
A merchant starts on a landing page or your app card. Then comes the app store page, setup, onboarding, subscription, trial and monetization. That easily adds up to 20 steps, and a merchant has to clear all of them to become a paying customer.
So conversion works as a series of multiplications:
| Change in your funnel | Effect on the whole funnel |
|---|---|
| One step improves 50% | +50%, on every traffic source |
| Step 2 improves 25% | +25% |
| Step 7 improves 25% | +25%, the same as step 2 |
| Three steps improve 25% each | 1.25 × 1.25 × 1.25 ≈ 2, the funnel doubles |
The +50% lands on your search traffic, your ad clicks and every other source at once. You pay nothing extra to acquire it.
Picture a Shopify app with 10,000 app store visitors a month. It converts 1% of them into new paying customers. $5,000 a month of ads brings in 1,000 of those visits.
| Funnel at 1% | Funnel at 2% | |
|---|---|---|
| New paying customers from 10,000 visitors | 100 | 200 |
| New paying customers from the $5,000 of ads (1,000 visits) | 10 | 20 |
| Ad spend per new paying customer | $500 | $250 |
Double the funnel and new paying customers double from the very same visitors. Each marketing dollar now returns twice as many customers.
Then it compounds. The campaigns you have earn a bigger budget. Campaigns that lost money before turn viable, so you can launch them too. Better funnels allow more aggressive marketing. Double your conversion rate and 3x+ growth is on the table.
In 2009 I joined ARX as Head of Marketing. Every prospect for its CoSign digital signature product had to pass through the website, so improving the conversion funnel was our top priority. The logic was simple:
“If we could double our conversion rate, we would double the efficiency of all our digital marketing efforts with a single stroke.”
Boaz Lantsman, Medium, December 2020
Traffic grew 4x. Conversion grew 16x. Leads went from 150 a month to 10,000. In 2015, DocuSign acquired ARX for nearly $100M. The full story is in how we multiplied conversion 16x on the way to a $100M exit.
Put your effort on the worst-performing steps. Pick several with real room to improve, since three 25% gains double the funnel. To know which steps are weak, you need each one next to a benchmark:
| Funnel stage (2026, 400+ active Shopify apps) | Average | Top quartile |
|---|---|---|
| App store page visit to install | 19.34% | 30.67% |
| Install to subscribe or trial | 29.89% | 49.96% |
| Visit to subscribe or trial | 5.63% | 9.77% |
| Visit to new paying customer | 2.12% | 3.41% |
| Uninstall within 24 hours | 30.71% | 22.80% |
Prys splits your funnel into steps and puts each next to other apps, so the gap and the size of the upside are clear before anyone writes code.
For what to change at each stage, from the app store page to the trial, see Shopify app conversion optimization best practices.
Finding the step is half the job. Fixing it is the other half.
Funnel optimization is the discipline Convert2x was built on in 2018. Our Shopify app funnel optimization covers a step-by-step benchmark diagnosis, merchant session-recording review, support-team interviews, redesigned flows (wireframes and copy) and measurement of every change. The typical result on full-funnel projects is a 2x conversion rate.
Pricing shapes conversion twice: on the app store page and at the end of the trial. So Shopify app pricing and monetization pairs with the funnel in the Full Growth Project.
A stronger funnel makes every source of merchants worth more, and lets you push harder on Shopify app store SEO and AEO, Google Ads for Shopify apps, Shopify App Store ads management and Meta ads for Shopify apps.

Because a Shopify app funnel is a series of multiplications. A 50% gain in one step lifts the whole funnel by 50%, and every traffic source with it, without paying more to acquire merchants. Improve three steps by 25% each and the funnel doubles. Most Shopify apps can at least double their funnel conversion rate.
It doubles new paying customers from the same traffic: 10,000 app store visitors a month at 1% give 100 paying customers, at 2% they give 200. Every marketing dollar also returns twice the customers. $5,000 of ads bringing 1,000 visits goes from 10 customers at $500 each to 20 at $250 each. More budget and newly profitable campaigns follow, so doubling conversion can triple new-customer growth.
The worst performers against benchmarks. There are about 20 steps from app store visit to paying customer. Across 400+ active Shopify apps (2026 benchmarks), visit to install averages 19.34% with a top quartile of 30.67%, and install to subscribe or trial averages 29.89% with a top quartile of 49.96%. Target several steps with a big gap.
Narrow it down to one screen while keeping the whole flow in view, since cutting a step can beat improving it. Measure every sub-step, watch session videos of merchants who dropped there, interview your support team and study competitors. Validate the new flow before coding it, then test both the step and the wider stage.
