Short answer: when Shopify app installs stall, we check six things, in this order. Which keywords and sources pay. Whether the gap is traffic or conversion. The listing copy. The app store page. The Shopify app store ads account. Then Google Ads. Each check moves either the number of merchants landing on your store page or the share of them who install. And the target is never installs alone. It is installs that become paying merchants.
Before we touch a listing or an ad, we look at installs, subscribers and revenue for every keyword and every source. Volume for its own sake fills the page with merchants who never pay.
We read quality from Prys keyword tracking. For volume, we divide impressions by visibility on exact-match Shopify Ads keywords, across enough weeks of data. A single top keyword can match the search count of the next nine put together. Blogs, partners and affiliates get the same test.
Each keyword then gets a revenue-potential score from quality, volume and difficulty, and lands in a tier of 4 to 5. Misspellings and small but valuable terms stay on the list. New apps start with niche keywords.
Next we set your numbers against the 2026 benchmarks, drawn from 400+ active Shopify apps:
| Where we look | Average app | Top quartile |
|---|---|---|
| Store page visitors per month | 644 | 1,075 |
| Installs per month | 147 | 268 |
| Visit to install | 19.34% | 30.67% |
Top-quartile apps draw 67% more visitors, yet 82% more installs. Part of that gap is traffic. Part of it is the page. We compare mean and top quartile, then focus on the weakest step.
“Growth relies on context. If you only look at your own metrics, you are optimizing in a vacuum.”

For most apps, no source brings more revenue than Shopify search. Change the copy and position moves right away, and traffic, installs and revenue follow. What we look for: a listing that hasn’t been systematically optimized, or not since launch.
We audit where the keywords sit, field by field:
| Listing field | Characters | Keyword weight |
|---|---|---|
| App name | 30 | Top priority |
| App card subtitle | 62 | Top priority |
| App introduction | 100 | Top priority |
| App details | 500 | Lower |
| Feature list | 5 × 80 | Lower |
Off the page: your 5 Partner Dashboard search terms, the URL keyword that follows the app name, and the Google title and meta description. The copy still has to read well, because the listing must convert.
Ranking comes down to four things: relevance of your title, description and keywords; reviews and recent ratings; install rates; and the Built for Shopify badge. The same listing feeds App Store search, Sidekick, Google and AI answers, so fixing it is App Store SEO and AEO at the same time.
In one app, the listing was untouched since launch. The copy changed on Sept 29: 56 Shopify search installs that month, 154 the next. That is our Shopify app store SEO and AEO service, and we recheck rankings within a day or two of every edit.
Whether a visitor installs depends on four things: how many reviews you have and their score, the visuals, how persuasive the copy is, and pricing with its presentation. Top pages clear 40% visit to install.
When the page is the leak, it becomes a Shopify app funnel optimization project.
Shopify Ads costs rise fast. Everyone competes for the same short-tail terms, and it gets worse in peak season. Most accounts we take over have no real structure: one campaign, mixed match types, bids set once and forgotten.
What we put in place:
That last step produced two separate results:
| Account | Suggested-keywords campaign |
|---|---|
| One account | Almost as many installs as the main campaign, nearly doubling installs |
| Another account | Installs at $3.58 each vs $9.98 |
Details on Shopify app store ads management.
Most merchant searches take place in the Shopify app store, so we cover it first. Then Google. Many Shopify app developers assume Google Ads doesn’t work for apps. It does now, because of Google’s AI campaigns. Hardly any Shopify apps buy ads there, yet merchants look up the problems apps solve on Google constantly.
How we set it up: we add “Shopify” as a negative in phrase match and build on searches without it. Wix, BigCommerce and WooCommerce are excluded. Every click lands on your app store listing. Manual CPC comes first, until about 30 conversions. Then the AI campaigns, AI Max and Performance Max, learning from the value of each install, subscription and payment, per keyword.
Result for a store optimization app: $8.1K spent, $45.8K in value generated, 563% ROAS, $0.07 average CPC. That is our managed Google Ads for Shopify apps.
Once Shopify and Google ads are stable, we test other platforms: Meta and Reddit. See Meta ads for Shopify apps. Past ads: cross-promotion with apps from other categories, outreach to merchants who fit your ideal profile, content, affiliate and influencer programs, and emails that turn trialists and free users into customers. What works differs from app to app. We measure revenue per tactic.
After the install, the merchant still needs to subscribe, then pay. On average, 29.89% of installs subscribe or start a trial, against 49.96% in the top quartile. The average app also sees 30.71% of installs uninstall within a day, vs 22.80% at the top.
These checks make up the 2-week growth plan that opens our Full Growth Project: traffic sources and keywords, SEO and AEO, the app card and listing, pricing, the post-install flow, and competitors’ listings, pricing and funnels. Either fewer merchants reach your app store page, or fewer of them install. Convert2x checks six things, in this order: which keywords and sources pay, whether the gap is traffic or conversion against the 2026 benchmarks, the listing copy, the store page, the Shopify app store ads account, and Google Ads.
In the 2026 benchmarks from 400+ active Shopify apps, the average app gets 147 installs a month, with 644 store page visitors and a 19.34% visit-to-install rate. The top quartile gets 268 installs, with 1,075 visitors and a 30.67% rate.
The app name (30 characters), the app card subtitle (62) and the app introduction (100) are the top-priority keyword fields. The app details (500) and the feature list (5 x 80) come next, plus the top 5 search terms in the Partner Dashboard, the keyword after the app name in the URL, and the search title and meta description.
Bid by what a visitor from each keyword is worth, clean the search terms report weekly with negatives, and add suggested keywords, including misspellings and variations, every two weeks in a separate campaign. In one account, suggested keywords brought installs at $3.58 each vs $9.98.
Cover the Shopify app store first, because most merchant searches take place there. Then Google Ads: few Shopify apps advertise there, and merchants search Google all day. Add 'Shopify' as a phrase-match negative, send the clicks to your app store listing, and start on manual CPC until about 30 conversions before moving to AI Max or Performance Max.
