A Shopify app can be worth building, but the numbers decide it, not the idea. The App Store pays out real money: Shopify paid developers more than $1.3 billion in 2025. But that money is concentrated in a small share of apps, the store adds well over a thousand apps a month, and distribution, not the code, is the hard part.
Before you build, check four things: search demand you can rank for, how strong the competitors are, what an install will cost, and whether the unit economics pay back.
I’m Boaz Lantsman, founder of Convert2x. We’ve grown 100+ Shopify apps since 2018, and the first step of our Shopify app launch work is exactly this check.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| Shopify, April 2026 | More than $1.3 billion paid to app developers last year; more than 21,000 apps; active app installs up nearly 20% |
| Prys benchmarks, 400+ active apps, 2026 | Average monthly revenue $8,769, top quartile $13,300; average MRR growth 2.96% a month, top quartile 5.75% |
| Barn2, Oct 2026 (third-party estimate) | The middle app earns roughly $2.5K to $5.2K a month before Shopify’s share |
The Prys benchmarks cover active apps connected to Prys, which skews toward apps that are already working. The middle of the whole store is lower.
Revenue is concentrated. Barn2’s 2026 estimate, from a sample of 4,438 apps: the 16 largest apps take 40.6% of estimated revenue, the top 83 take 72.2%, and half of all apps share 0.6%. RevenueHunt counted 22,546 live apps in June 2026, with 51% at zero reviews and 81% below 10. Both are third-party estimates, but they point the same way: most apps earn little, a few earn most.
The store grows faster than the merchants it serves. Barn2 estimates apps grow about 28% a year against 10-14% for shops, with apps per thousand shops up from 5.5 in 2023 to 8.8 in 2026. AppJubilee counted 7,003 new apps in the year to May 2026. New releases grew from about 50 a week to over 750 a week, according to Store Leads.
More apps means more competition for the same searches and the same Shopify Ads keywords. A new app wins by starting with niche keywords it can rank for, not the head terms.
| Cost | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Review wait | Shopify gives no timeframe; developers reported about a month or more in 2026 (community.shopify.dev) |
| Revenue share | 0% on your first $1M of lifetime revenue, 15% above that, plus $19 to register (Shopify) |
| Maintenance | Shopify API changes, the latest App Bridge, compliance webhooks |
| Churn | Barn2 estimates a typical app loses about 4 shops for every 10 it gains (third-party) |
| Distribution | Ads, listing work, outreach: the part that decides whether anyone installs |
This is the market assessment we run before a client builds:
Developers on the Shopify forums say it again and again: building the app was the easy part, getting installs is the hard part (community.shopify.dev). A new app with no reviews barely shows in App Store search. So the plan has to include, from week one:
Our market assessment, go-to-market plan and forecasts is the first step of the Shopify app launch: two weeks, delivered as a document and a model sheet, ending in a go / no-go. Then the Shopify app launch checklist covers everything before and after you submit.
It can be, but the numbers decide it, not the idea. Shopify paid developers more than $1.3 billion in 2025, yet revenue is concentrated in a small share of apps and the store keeps getting more crowded. Check demand you can rank for, competitor strength, acquisition costs and unit economics before you build.
Across 400+ active Shopify apps tracked by Prys in 2026, average monthly revenue is $8,769 and the top quartile $13,300. Independent estimates put the middle app far lower, and revenue is concentrated: one 2026 study estimated the top 83 apps take 72% of revenue.
Shopify said in April 2026 that it has more than 21,000 apps. Independent trackers counted between about 18,000 and 31,000 live apps in 2026, depending on how they count, with more than a thousand new apps a month.
Check search demand for the keywords merchants would use and which of them a new app can reach the top 10 for, map competitors' plans, prices, installs and reviews, estimate cost per install on Shopify App Store Ads and Google Ads, and model acquisition cost, payback and break-even.
Developers keep 100% of their first $1,000,000 in lifetime gross app revenue (counted from January 1, 2025) and 85% above that, after a one-time $19 registration per Partner account.
Distribution. Building the app is rarely the hard part; getting merchants to find it, install it and pay is. A new app with no reviews barely shows in App Store search, so plan for niche keywords, Shopify Ads from week one and hands-on outreach.
