Short answer: start Google Ads weeks before BFCM. Set up compliant keywords, bid manually until roughly 30 conversions, then hand bidding to Google’s AI (AI Max or Performance Max) and report every install, subscription and payment with its value by keyword. When merchants arrive to buy, the AI already knows which searches lead to the ones who pay.
“Most Shopify app devs assume Google Ads doesn’t work for apps. With peak season coming, that assumption is costing them growth.”

Shopify Ads cost more every season. Every app chases identical app store keywords, and BFCM only adds to the crowd.
On Google the competition is thin. Hardly any Shopify apps buy ads there, yet merchants turn to Google constantly with the problems your app solves, such as abandoned carts or product bundles. Your ad can sit beside Google’s AI summary as well as the regular results.
What changed is Google’s AI campaigns. A few years ago, Google Ads rarely paid off for Shopify apps; with AI bidding, it does. The catch is that AI campaigns learn from conversions, and they need enough of them before they can bid toward the merchants you want. That learning has to happen before the rush, not during it.
One hard rule: “Shopify” must be a negative keyword. Build the account from merchant searches without it, exclude competing platforms, and point the ads at your app store listing, where Google labels the ad “Shopify App Store” by itself. Bid manually until about 30 conversions, then move to AI bidding. The full keyword setup is in our 7-step Google Ads playbook for Shopify apps.
Whatever you report as a conversion is what the AI chases. Report clicks and you get people who click. Report installs and you get free installers. For merchants who pay, the AI needs to see which searches lead to them, and the more accurate that data, the better it performs.
So report three events per merchant, each carrying its actual value, by keyword, with the click ID attached:
| Event | What the AI learns from it |
|---|---|
| Install | Which searches bring merchants who try the app |
| Subscribe | Which of them start a plan or trial |
| Payment | Which of them pay, and what they’re worth |
We connect every client account to Prys for this: it values each install, subscription and payment by keyword and reports them to Google, so AI Max and Performance Max optimize for revenue rather than clicks.
Once the conversions are flowing, test both against each other. They reach merchants differently:
| AI Max | Performance Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows | Search results, plus placements beside Google’s AI summaries | YouTube, Display, Gmail and the rest of Google |
| Keywords | Starts from yours, then reaches further by reading your pages and assets | None |
| Best for | Pure high-intent search traffic | Reach across Google beyond search |
AI Max is Search with Google’s AI in charge from start to finish. It writes headlines and descriptions to fit each query, chooses which page the click lands on, and Smart Bidding prices every auction toward the conversions you said to value.
After the switch, keep at it: tighten negatives every week, add new keywords from your data and from Google’s suggestions, pit AI campaign types against each other, and track ROAS in Google Ads itself.
For catching merchants, Performance Max and AI Max are still blue ocean.
The app store listing stays the default. Running an offer is one of the three cases where a landing page earns its place, and a BFCM offer is the obvious one. If you build one, your tracking has to carry the campaign, keyword and click ID from the page through the App Store to install, subscribe and payment, or a Max ROAS campaign has nothing to learn from. What goes on the page, and how to keep the attribution: landing pages for Shopify app Google Ads.
We set up and manage Google Ads for Shopify apps end to end: the compliant keyword setup, the manual-to-AI ramp, conversion values by keyword, and weekly optimization. It’s $1K/mo plus media, with about $2K/mo of media as a typical start. Google's AI needs conversions before it can learn which searches lead to paying merchants, and it only takes over after about 30 conversions on manual CPC. Starting weeks ahead means the learning is done when the season peaks.
Yes, with the right setup. Exclude Shopify with a phrase-match negative, target searches that don't mention Shopify, exclude rival platforms, and point the ads at your app store listing. Google itself labels the ad with the Shopify logo and Shopify App Store, so merchants know it's a Shopify app and you stay compliant.
AI Max works inside Search: it appears beside Google's AI summaries, reaches beyond your keyword list, writes the ads and chooses the landing page. Performance Max has no keywords and spreads the budget across YouTube, Display, Gmail and the rest of Google.
Install, subscribe and payment events, each carrying its actual value, by keyword, with the click ID attached. Report only clicks or installs and the AI goes after clickers and free installers rather than merchants who pay.
The listing by default, because it converts best. A landing page is worth it when you run an offer, monetize outside Shopify, or target a keyword too competitive for the listing, provided your tracking carries the campaign, keyword and click ID through to the App Store.
