You transfer Shopify app ownership to your Partner account through Shopify Partner Support, and you need Shopify’s written consent first. Shopify’s Partner Program Agreement (section 9.7) says a partner can’t transfer the agreement without Shopify’s consent, and that a transfer includes an acquisition, merger or change of control.
Shopify moves the app between Partner organizations internally, so the app keeps its identity. Shopify doesn’t publish what moves with it. Below is what is confirmed, what developers report, and what is still unknown, plus a checklist for before and after the deal.
Most guides you’ll find are about transferring a Shopify store. Moving an App Store app to a new owner is different, and it is barely documented.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| Partner Program Agreement, 9.7 (updated Feb 27, 2026) | No right to assign or transfer the agreement without Shopify’s consent, “to be given or withheld in Shopify’s sole discretion”. Transfer “can include acquisition, merger, change of control, or other forms of transfer”. |
| API License and Terms of Use, 14.6 | The same consent rule. The API license itself is non-transferable (2.2). |
| API Terms, 2.1.5 | API credentials are Shopify’s property and can’t be shared with a third party, except a service provider. |
| API Terms, 6.2.8 | Data received from Shopify can’t be transferred to a third party or to another app you own. |
What this means for a buyer: make the deal conditional on Shopify’s consent, and don’t plan to merge the acquired app’s merchant data into another app you own.
Shopify has no public guide, but its staff and developers describe the same route on the developer forums:
Because Shopify moves the app itself, the app keeps its identity: its client ID and handle identify it (Shopify API docs). Here is what we could confirm, what is reported, and what is unknown.
| Item | Status | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| The app’s identity (client ID, handle) | Moves with the app | An internal move keeps the same app |
| Active subscriptions and app charges | Stay with the app | A shop has one recurring charge per app, and charges belong to the app (Billing API) |
| App Store listing, reviews, installs | Reported kept | A developer reported settings were kept; Shopify doesn’t document it |
| Payouts | Set by the new owner | Payouts are set per organization in Organization settings > Payouts, and changing them needs the Manage financials permission (Shopify) |
| Revenue share tier | Check before the deal | The 0% tier on the first $1M is counted across all Associated Developer Accounts (Shopify), so a buyer that already has apps may not get it again |
| Built for Shopify status | Unknown | It depends on the app’s installs, reviews and rating, and on the owner’s good Partner standing (Shopify) |
| Shopify App Store ads account | Unknown | Ad fees are charged to the developer’s payment method; Shopify doesn’t say how ads move |
| Hosting, domains, email, support desk, analytics | Outside Shopify | These are the seller’s accounts and move under your purchase agreement |
Ask Partner Support to confirm each unknown item for your app before you close.
Recreating the app under your own Partner account with new API credentials looks simpler. It isn’t. A new client ID is a new app: merchants would have to install it again and approve charges again, and the listing, reviews and installs belong to the old app. Shopify’s terms also don’t let the seller share its API credentials with you. Move the app itself through Partner Support.
Shopify staff said in 2025 that Shopify doesn’t offer a way to merge specific apps into one, and that subscriptions and merchant authorizations can’t simply be moved to another app (community.shopify.dev). Plan on running the acquired app as its own app.

Still deciding on a price? See how to value a Shopify app. Owning the app is the start. The App Store is increasingly competitive, and developers who want to sell usually stop optimizing. That is where the value is: the funnel, pricing, App Store SEO and AEO, and ads usually have a lot of room to grow. See why acquired Shopify apps stall, and how we grow them in bought a Shopify app.
This guide reflects Shopify’s public terms and developer reports as of October 2026. Shopify can change its process at any time; confirm the details with Partner Support for your app.
Yes, through Shopify Partner Support. Shopify has internal processes to move an app between Partner organizations, and staff ask for the IDs of both Partner accounts. Shopify has no public step-by-step document for it.
Yes. Shopify's Partner Program Agreement says a partner can't assign or transfer the agreement without Shopify's consent, given or withheld at Shopify's sole discretion, and a transfer includes an acquisition, merger or change of control. The API Terms have the same rule.
When Shopify moves the app itself between Partner accounts, the app keeps its identity, and developers report that its settings are kept. Shopify doesn't document the details. Rebuilding the app under new credentials is different: that is a new app, and merchants would have to install it again.
Not if the app itself is moved, because subscriptions belong to the app. If the buyer recreates the app under new API credentials, it is a different app, so merchants would need to install and approve it again.
Not easily. Shopify staff said in 2025 that Shopify doesn't offer a way to merge specific apps into one, and that subscriptions and merchant authorizations can't simply move to another app.
Shopify publishes no timeframe. One developer reported his app was moved a couple of weeks after the support ticket. Make the purchase conditional on Shopify's consent, and plan the handover around it.
