Acquired Shopify apps stall for one main reason: developers who want to sell typically lose interest in optimization, while the App Store keeps getting more competitive and harder to grow in. A handover gap in support and accounts, and reviews that slow down, make it worse.
That same gap is where the value is. Investing in the funnel, pricing and optimized acquisition very likely unlocks it, and puts the app on a much faster growth trajectory. It takes everything optimized: the funnel, pricing, App Store SEO and AEO. And ads need expertise.
I’m Boaz Lantsman, founder of Convert2x. We’ve grown 100+ Shopify apps since 2018, including apps their new owners had just bought.
A Shopify app is easy to manage. Shopify bills the merchant, so there’s no billing to run. There’s no inventory. Tech maintenance is simple. And an app can grow very big in the App Store: Shopify said in April 2026 that it paid more than $1.3 billion to app developers the year before.
Developers who want to sell typically lose interest in optimization. The listing hasn’t been touched in a while, pricing hasn’t changed since launch, the funnel was never measured step by step, and the ads, if any, run on old settings.
Every tracker shows the same direction, though their counts differ by method:
| Source | What it counted |
|---|---|
| Shopify, April 2026 | More than 21,000 apps |
| AppJubilee, May 2026 | 17,891 active apps; 7,003 new in a year |
| RevenueHunt, June 2026 | 22,546 live apps; 51% with zero reviews, 81% with fewer than 10 |
| Store Leads | New releases up from about 50 a week to over 750 a week |
| community.shopify.dev, Oct 2026 | About 30,800 active apps; new launches up about 10% in a month while new reviews fell about 4% |
More apps compete for the same searches and the same Shopify Ads keywords. An app that isn’t actively optimized loses ground.
The first weeks after a sale are fragile. Support messages can go to the previous owner while channels are being moved; in one case a merchant left a 1-star review because of it (App Store review). Founder-owned accounts (API keys, hosting, email, the support desk) and the Shopify transfer itself all need to move without merchants noticing. See how to transfer Shopify app ownership.
Reviews and recent ratings are one of the four factors that decide where an app ranks in App Store search, next to relevance, install rates and the Built for Shopify badge. When a seller stops asking for reviews after support calls and stops answering unhappy merchants quickly, the review pace drops, and rankings follow.
Many apps grew on organic App Store search alone. Shopify Ads, if they run, were set up once. Google Ads, where few Shopify apps compete, was never opened. Acquisition without expertise doesn’t keep up with a more crowded store.
The same gaps that stall an acquired app are what make it worth buying. Value is very likely to be unlocked by investing in three places:
| Lever | Why it has room in a bought app | What it has done on live apps |
|---|---|---|
| App Store SEO and AEO | The listing is often untouched since launch | 56 to 154 Shopify search installs a month (3×) on a listing untouched since launch |
| Shopify Ads and Google Ads | Ads ran on old settings, or not at all | Installs at $3.58 vs $9.98 on Shopify Ads; 563% ROAS at $0.07 CPC on Google Ads |
| Funnel | Never measured step by step | Improving three steps by 25% doubles the funnel |
| Pricing | Unchanged since launch | $100K to $450K Shopify MRR in 5 months |
The funnel is a series of multiplications, so a better funnel lifts every traffic source at once. And pricing shapes conversion twice, on the app store page and at the end of the trial, while moving revenue directly.
Brokers and advisors look at the financials (the multiples are in how to value a Shopify app). Look at the growth engine too:
| Days | Focus | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 30 | Stabilize | The Shopify transfer, accounts, support coverage and fast replies to every review, so merchants notice nothing |
| 15 to 45 | Diagnose | A full read: listing and keywords, ranks, the Shopify Ads history, the funnel step by step, pricing |
| 30 to 90 | Grow | App Store SEO and AEO, Shopify Ads on the keywords that pay, Google Ads, funnel and pricing optimization |

Developers who want to sell typically lose interest in optimization, while the App Store keeps getting more competitive. Add a handover gap in support and accounts, and reviews that slow down, and growth stalls. The same gap is the opportunity: the funnel, pricing and acquisition usually have a lot of room to improve.
A Shopify app is easy to manage: Shopify bills the merchant, so there's no billing to run, there's no inventory, and tech maintenance is simple. And an app can grow very big in the App Store.
Where installs come from and how much depends on ads, how the app ranks for its main keywords, the pace of new reviews, churn and revenue retention, how concentrated revenue is, which accounts are tied to the founder personally, and whether Shopify will consent to the transfer.
Stabilize first: support, accounts and the transfer, so merchants notice nothing. Then get a full read of the listing, keywords, ads, funnel and pricing. Then grow: App Store SEO and AEO, Shopify Ads and Google Ads with expertise, and funnel and pricing optimization.
Shopify said in April 2026 that it has more than 21,000 apps. Independent trackers counted between about 18,000 and 31,000 live apps in 2026, depending on method, with well over a thousand new apps a month, and most apps have fewer than 10 reviews.
Optimize everything the seller left behind: the listing for App Store SEO and AEO, the funnel from app store page to paying merchant, and pricing. Then run acquisition with expertise: Shopify Ads on the keywords that pay, and Google Ads, where few Shopify apps compete.
Convert2x has grown 100+ Shopify apps, and only Shopify apps, since 2018.
