Short answer: to promote a Shopify app, first learn which keywords and sources bring merchants who pay. Put the best keywords into your listing’s strongest fields (app store SEO and AEO). Then buy traffic in order: Shopify Ads on proven keywords, then Google Ads with AI bidding fed install, subscribe and payment values. Once search is stable, test Meta, Reddit and the tactics beyond search. Measure each source by the installs, subscribers and revenue it brings, never by visits.
The Shopify App Store is more crowded every week. New Shopify app releases grew from about 50 a week to over 750 a week, according to Store Leads. Competition keeps getting fiercer.
I’m Boaz Lantsman. I founded Convert2x, the Shopify app growth agency, in 2018, and I’ve worked hands-on with 100+ Shopify apps. This is how we grow their traffic today.
Shopify app growth has three pillars. Traffic. Conversion. Monetization. A great product only gets you in the door: 4.5-star apps far outnumber $100K-MRR apps. The apps that grow past $100K MRR get all three right.
This is Part 1, on traffic. Part 2: Conversion Optimization covers the funnel, and Part 3: Pricing & Monetization covers revenue per merchant.
Before scaling, find out which keywords and sources pay. Chase volume alone and you bring in low-quality visitors, and they don’t pay.
Score each keyword on three things:
| Signal | What it tells you | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Volume | Search demand for the term | Shopify Ads, exact match only: impressions divided by visibility, over a long enough timeframe |
| Quality | Whether those merchants pay | Revenue, subscribers and installs for each keyword, from keyword-level revenue attribution |
| Difficulty | The effort needed to rank | Who already ranks ahead of you |
Volume is lopsided. Your #1 keyword can match the searches of your next nine keywords put together.
Rank keywords by revenue potential, which combines quality, volume and difficulty. Group the result into tiers 1, 2 and 3, with 4 to 5 keywords each. Low-volume keywords that pay belong on the list too, and so do misspellings. If your app is new, go after niche keywords first.
Treat non-search sources the same way. A blog, a partner or an affiliate earns more effort only if it brings installs, subscribers and revenue. Referral partners are a good test: the ones that bring revenue point to the relationships worth nurturing, expanding and replicating.
The 2026 Shopify app benchmarks, drawn from 400+ active apps:
| Metric | Average app | Top quartile |
|---|---|---|
| Store page visitors per month | 644 | 1,075 |
| Visit-to-install rate | 19.34% | 30.67% |
| Installs per month | 147 | 268 |
| Value of one store page visitor | $9.43 | $13.58 |
Top-quartile apps get 67% more visitors, yet 82% more installs. A visitor’s value is your break-even CPC: the most a visit is worth paying for.
Shopify search is the #1 revenue source for most apps. Copy changes move your position, traffic, installs and revenue, strongly and right away.
Four factors decide where a listing ranks in Shopify App Store search (more in Shopify app store ranking factors):
Keyword placement is the one you control directly, and the fastest. Place keywords by priority:
| Field | Characters | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| App name | 30 | Top priority |
| App card subtitle | 62 | Top priority |
| App introduction | 100 | Top priority |
| App details | 500 | Lower |
| Feature list (5 features) | 80 each | Lower |
| Partner Dashboard search terms | Top 5 keywords | Also set |
| Listing URL | Keyword after the app name | Also set |
| SEO title and meta description | Shown on Google | Also set |
Most top apps combine brand and keyword in the name. Some go all-keyword. Top-ranking apps put keywords in both name and subtitle, and repeat them. General copy and bullets carry keywords too, and some repetition is fine. Still, balance SEO impact with human readability. The listing has to convert the merchants it brings in.
The same listing now feeds App Store search, Shopify’s Sidekick, Google and AI answers. Optimize it for App Store SEO and you do AEO at the same time. Pick the category your merchants search in and convert from.
One or two days after every change, check your rankings and adjust if needed. Keep tracking them, look for new keyword opportunities, and refresh the listing periodically.
Results we publish:
| App | After the copy rewrite |
|---|---|
| Listing untouched since launch | 3x Shopify search installs: 56 to 154 a month |
| Another app | 2.5x search visitors, 2.75x search installs |
We deliver this as Shopify app store SEO and AEO, done for you in one week.
Shopify Ads costs climb quickly. All apps compete for the same short-tail keywords, and peak season adds pressure. Four habits keep the account profitable:
That last habit is where extra installs come from. In one account, the suggested-keywords campaign nearly doubled installs. In another, suggested keywords brought installs at $3.58 each vs $9.98.
The account build is in Shopify Ads campaign structure. We manage it as Shopify app store ads management.
Google is the other side of the coin. Hardly any Shopify apps advertise on it, yet merchants type their problems into Google all day. Clicks cost less and competition is thinner. The reason it works for Shopify apps today: Google’s AI campaigns.
Keyword setup. Bidding on “Shopify” is off the table. Make it a phrase-match negative. Aim at searches that never mention it, such as “inventory for ecommerce”. Exclude Wix, BigCommerce and WooCommerce, and point the ads at your app store listing.
Bidding ramp:
| Stage | Campaign | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Manual CPC | Builds data until the account has about 30 conversions |
| 2 | AI Max | Search, supercharged: appears beside Google’s AI summaries, expands past your keywords, writes the ads |
| 2 | Performance Max | Keywordless reach across Google: YouTube, Display, Gmail |
At stage 2, test the two AI campaign types against each other.
What the AI learns depends on what you feed it. Send it clicks and it chases clicks. Send it revenue and it finds merchants who pay. So we send Google an event for each install, subscription and payment, with its value, by keyword, through Prys. Then every week we refine negatives, add keywords, test AI campaign types and track ROAS in Google Ads.
| Account | Result |
|---|---|
| A store optimization app | 563% ROAS at $0.07 average CPC: $45.8K in value on $8.1K of spend |
| AI Max, one account, 8 weeks | 740% ROAS |
“PMax, and now AI Max, for Search and AI Overviews. It’s still blue ocean territory to catch merchants.”

Launch well before peak season: the AI needs time to learn before merchants come buying. The full method is our Google Ads playbook for Shopify apps, and the managed version is Google Ads for Shopify apps.
Your app store listing converts best, so it stays the default destination for ads. Three cases justify a landing page: monetization outside Shopify, a keyword too competitive to send to the listing, or an offer you want to promote.
What goes on it:
A direct install link cuts out the listing step. Keep the tracking intact too: the click out to the App Store drops the campaign, keyword and click ID unless your tracking carries them. More in landing pages for Shopify app Google Ads.
Once Shopify Ads and Google Ads are stable, Meta and Reddit are the next platforms to test. Meta’s Maximize ROAS campaigns optimize for revenue, but only if you send them conversion values. See Meta ads for Shopify apps.
Tactics beyond ads:
What works differs from app to app. Test the tactics you believe in, and measure the revenue from each.
Same order as the traffic sources in my 2026 webinar:
| Step | What | Judge it by |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rank keywords and sources | Installs, subscribers, revenue per keyword |
| 2 | App store SEO & AEO | Shopify search visitors and installs |
| 3 | Shopify Ads | Installs, subscribers and revenue by keyword |
| 4 | Google Ads, manual CPC, then AI | ROAS |
| 5 | Meta, Reddit, tactics beyond search | Revenue per tactic |
Traffic pays off fastest into a funnel that converts. That is Shopify app funnel optimization. Pricing moves revenue directly: Shopify app pricing and monetization.
We take each step above as a service, or all of them as the full growth project for Shopify apps, sequenced so each lever compounds the others. See the Shopify apps we’ve worked with, or start with a free growth assessment.
Find the keywords and sources that bring paying merchants first. Then grow traffic in order: app store SEO and AEO on your listing, Shopify Ads on your proven keywords, Google Ads with AI bidding fed real conversion values, and, once search is stable, Meta, Reddit and tactics beyond search. Measure every source by installs, subscribers and revenue.
In the three top-priority listing fields: the app name (30 characters), the app card subtitle (62) and the app introduction (100). The app details (500) and the feature list (5 x 80) come next. Also set the top 5 search terms in the Partner Dashboard, a keyword after the app name in the URL, and the SEO title and meta description Google shows.
Cover the Shopify app store first. Most merchant searches take place there, so start with Shopify Ads plus app store SEO and AEO, then move on to Google Ads. Most apps end up using both.
No. Add "Shopify" as a phrase-match negative, target searches that don't mention it, exclude Wix, BigCommerce and WooCommerce, and send the clicks to your app store listing.
Across 400+ active Shopify apps in 2026, the average app store page gets 644 visitors a month and the top quartile 1,075. An average visitor is worth $9.43 and a top-quartile visitor $13.58, which is also the break-even cost per click.
